Yoga in Lockdown

£500.00

Acrylic paint and spray paint on stretched canvas.

This painting was exhibited in Healing from Within contemporary art exhibition, by Create! Magazine.

A contemplative piece of work where I reflected upon mindfulness and the techniques and behaviours that I pressured myself to do at times with the belief that they would make me feel better in the long run. Of course being mindful can be extremely beneficial, but it cannot always be so easily achieved when unwell.
I hope that viewers will see or feel the intensity of emotion I have tried to express through this vulnerable, curled up figure, struggling with trying to push through a difficult time using yoga stretches.
Bringing a modern edge, geometric shapes in skin tones have mixed and slotted together over parts of the body, in particular the upper back and shoulders. At the time of this painting, I was suffering from a lot of upper back and neck pain, part of the reason why I was practicing yoga, and the jagged shapes and patches like skin are symbolic of this.

It captures a serene moment of personal reflection and resilience amidst challenging times. The composition centres on a figure engaged in a yoga pose, which should be embodying calmness and focus, but this was not in fact the case. The block colour background hints at the intimate nature of practising mindfulness within the confines of lockdown.

The artwork conveys a poignant narrative about attempting to find balance and inner peace during isolation.
